Went to Jessica's company's Christmas party last night... yup, in November.  It was a murder-mystery comedy dinner at the Lumber Baron Inn.  It was pretty funny, good food, good time.  Tonight and tomorrow night I'm doing some web consulting, so I've got a busy week away from home.  But worry not, little grasshopper, I shall utilize my VCR (yes, those still work just fine) to tape Lost this evening, and I shall watch it tonight as well.

Ask and you shall receive.  Thanks to the boys (Luke and Jamie) back at Hy-Vee's headquarters in WDM, your gold bouillon is in the mail.  I'm still laughing ... FYI.

I need a burrito ASAP, instead I'll sit here for 2 hours and 9 more minutes and do more database upgrades, they're coming along quite nicely.

Please re-read what I wrote in yesterday's news, it read exactly like this:
First of all, it should have never gone to OT because in my honest opinion, both Shockey and Toomer's TD's should have not been called TD's, so in my opinion we should have won by 15 in regulation. However, the refs didn't see it that way, so we went to OT.
........
To all you know-it-all's who keep telling me there's no way the Seahawks should have won the game on Sunday, please read this official press release.  In case you're too lazy to click the link here's the headline and a few quotes from the article:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
League to Seahawks: Shockey, Toomer catches weren't TDs

Coaches from around the league routinely submit disputed plays after games to NFL officiating chief Mike Pereira and his staff for review. They usually get a response midweek, though that response is usually never made public.  And, practically speaking, teams usually get nothing more than a "sorry" if the league agrees with a coach's contention, because results are not changed.
...........
Sunday, with 1:14 left in the second quarter and the Seahawks leading 7-3, Shockey briefly caught a 7-yard pass from Eli Manning in the center of the end zone. Seattle safety Marquand Manuel then lowered his right shoulder into Shockey and forced the ball to the turf, though officials signaled a touchdown.
........
With 2:03 left in regulation, Toomer leaped high and caught another pass at the back of the end zone. Toomer got his left foot down inside the end line and then appeared to drag the toes of his right shoe into his left as it hit the turf.
......
The NFL said touchdown catches made by Jeremy Shockey and Amani Toomer shouldn't have been ruled completions.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you, thank you very much.  I was again right, and my Seahawks, as usual, deserve more credit than they are given.  Take away these 15 points and our 3 OT points and we have a score of 21-6.  That's right folks, 21-6.  Hell, let's even assume that we gave up field goals to them on both of those drives - after all, we didn't give up a legitimate TD all game, so why would they have scored one?  We won that game, generously, 21-12.  Stop telling me we were given that game when it's blatently obvious we won.

It wasn't pretty, but it did put us to 9-2, and the Seahawks have now won 7 in a row.  Honestly, I can't f'n believe we won that game.  First of all, it should have never gone to OT because in my honest opinion, both Shockey and Toomer's TD's should have not been called TD's, so in my opinion we should have won by 15 in regulation.   However, the refs didn't see it that way, so we went to OT.  Normally I'm a huge advocate of giving the winning team credit, I hate headlines such as "Duke Loses" or "Texas Finally Defeated" as it doesn't give the winning team much credit.  However, yesterday - the Giants (and Texans) found a way to lose.  The Seahawks were trying to give that game away, but the Giants (and Rams) kept saying, "No, we don't want the win, you take it."  The Giants blew that game.   But hey, a win's a win, we're 9-2 and still have the best record in the NFC.   Bring on the Eagles on Monday Night Football!!

On a side-note, Jeremy Shockey's premature celebration as Feeley missed the end-of-regulation field goal is one of the funniest things I've seen in years, I'll pay you in gold bullion (the wrapping will be gold, it's just beef bouillon inside) if anyone can find me a video clip of this, it'll remain permanently on my downloads page.  I'll honestly mail you the bouillon.

As for the Cyclones, I'll just say this.  After being an ISU fan and a Seahawks fan for so long, I expect OT games to be losses.  Thankfully the Seahawks snapped this long-standing trend, but that was after the fact.  I would have bet my life savings on a Cyclone loss the second that game entered OT, which is why I didn't watch the overtime.  After seeing loss after loss after loss in OT, I just couldn't take it.   Something good and something bad came out of that game.  Bad:  We don't get to win the Big XII North outright, that sucks.   Good:  We don't have to get demolished by Texas.  Again, in my honest opinion, I think Texas will beat USC in the championship by about 20 points minimum, they're that good.  Did you see what they did to Ohio State earlier this season on the road?!  They're ridiculously good.

So yeah, good weekend other than the ISU game.  Wednesday just chilled at Old Chicago for awhile (had to get my picks in as the games started Thursday this week).   Had Thanksgiving over at Jessica's place with her parents and Bob.  Friday I did some shopping (got a new 18V cordless drill for $30 and got 225 DVD+R's and 75 CD-R's for $9 (total).... what a deal, eh?  Friday afternoon I changed all of Laetitia's fluids and gave her an interior sparkling she's been needing since my ankle's demise.   Friday night was a chill at home night.  Saturday I watched the 'Clones first 4 quarters, did ironing, cleaned up my room, scanned some pictures, did laundry, etc.   Saturday night I headed down to Adrian's place in the Springs and played poker.   Sunday I had a heart attack on Adrian's kickass huge comfy chair as I watched the Chargers win in OT and the Seahawks pull something out of their ass in OT (for some reason I had to watch this OT game, probably 'cuz I cheer for the Seahawks about 20x harder than I do for ISU).

Last night = drive back to Denver, eat Subway, watch Family Guy, go to bed.   Here I am ready to work my first full week of November - bring it on!  Back to Oracle stuff as I finally got my new version of the MKS Toolkit, giggidy.

Another day, another x-ray.    Lookin' good, side-by-side, my November 23 x-rays look flat-out Extreme Makeover: Home Edition different from my August 29th x-rays.

So the break is still apparent (I guess this is normal) and no running for 4 weeks ... but here comes the good news.   No more ankle brace!  No limits on weight lifting!  No limits on anything other than running.  Am I cleared to snowboard?   In the doc's words, "You can go whenever you'd like, but you won't be able to for probably 3 weeks."  In other words ... it won't hurt me to snowboard, but my muscles aren't yet ready.  So my already-in-high-gear rehab is going to keep going at its pace and I'm shooting for an official "First Snowboarding Day Of The Season" of December 17, 2005.  That's right, I'm 24 days away from snowboarding again.   I'll be running by New Year's.  Things are getting better quickly, I just need to keep kicking the gym's ass and I'll be winning gold medals shortly.

I'm out of here in an hour until Monday, have a great Terrell Owens day, er, Turkey Day.

Did I mention that Kelly was randomly on one of my flights this weekend?  That was pretty cool.  Then I ran into Keith and his woman in the airport on Sunday.  That was also pretty cool.

I posted pictures from the weekend, sorry Mule - didn't snap any of Cameron.  Amanda will console you, I'm sure.

I have a doctor appointment tomorrow where we'll get another lookise at my ankle via X-Ray, I'm really curious how that will turn out.  I can guaran-damn-tee you there's no chance of me riding a snowboard until likely 2006, and you have no idea how upset I am about that.

New MP3 is up.  Oh - forgot, I posted a rant yesterday morning that I wrote last week ... but one of yesterday's comics just put the icing on the cake as to wether or not it was worth posting (as I never end up posting about 80% of them).

4 plane trips, 4 airports, 3-ish hours of sleep, 1 wedding, 1 Seahawks victory, 3 home cooked meals, 1 hard drive installed, countless friends seen, 1 night in Des Moines, 1 night in Carroll, 1/2 piece of cake, and the funniest line of all time (as spoken by Chief) ... that took place in the previous 48 hours, and now I'm back in Denver.   Pictures are at home, I got home from the airport and had never felt a bed more comfortable ... tonight I just want to go to the gym, make some spaghetti, clean my room, and then ... ahhh ... the sweet sound of relxation will finally be apparent.

Jerry Lee Lewis looked terrible on the Johnny Cash thing last night, wow.  Lost again was very cool, that show is awesome.

Tonight I have to get laundry done and get packed as I fly out at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.   I have a layover in St. Louis for 1 1/2 hours, then on Sunday I have a 2 hour layover at O'Hare in Chi-town.  Hoping to find the Seahawks game on TV somewhere in the airport at that time, we play San Fran, so hoping we can pull that one off.

I'm not very motivated these days to do anything.  The gym is so hard to get back into after not going for 3 months.  Cleaning at home and getting out of bed sucks when it's cold outside.  I don't have the motivation to get back in shape as I can't ride my board due to the bum ankle, anyways.  Hell, I don't even do my Old C's football picks any more, last week I had Bob fill them out for me, and I was lazy for that, I just said "Pick all the home teams, put 14 points on Seattle, then count down from 13 to 1 from top to bottom on the sheet."  I still won a free appetizer, how'd that happen??  Next thing you know, I'll only be watching 2 TV's at a time while watching the NFL games on Sundays.  Ok, maybe that won't change.  However, I need something to sweep me up and get me back to my normal ways, I feel very far away from myself right now.

Tonight the O.C. is on, I think I'll keep the tradition of not watching it alive as that show has gotten dumb since the high school chicks aren't lesbians any more.   Arrested Development got canceled (an offical "rant" is in the works)... that means I'm down to Lost and Family Guy for shows I watch now.... but

I AM starting to get back into hockey, I now know the players (by name, not numbers yet) on the remodeled Avalanche team.  And we're doing fairly well considering we lost Forsberg (who is absolutely tearing up the "assist" stat in Philly with like 30 or something absurd like that).

Anyways, that's all I've got for you today, new pic of the day and MP3 have been posted, so you can go enjoy those all you'd like.

TGIBD (Thank God It's Burrito Day).  I'm going through Chipotle withdrawl.

I need to vent about 2 things today, and that's it for the news.........

1) I was late for work yesterday due to bad roads in Golden and the exit was backed up about 2 blocks onto Highway 58.  I can deal with that, what I can't deal with is dogs.  I was sitting at a red light, the car in front of me had a dog loose in the car.  I'm strongly against having a dog in a car if it's not in a cage.  I believe it is a tremendous safety hazard to other drivers as the driver cannot possibly concentrate as well with a dog jumping all over the place.  In yesterday's case, the dog is sitting on the driver's lap looking out the window.   What kind of moron let's their dog do this?!  So as soon as the light turns green, this dipshit is sitting here trying to get his dog off him so he can drive; he is unsuccessful as dog sees something really enticing outside: a leaf.  The next thing you know, the light is red again and the car hasn't moved, along with me or the 7 cars behind me.   Now my question for you:  Why on Earth wasn't this dog in a cage in the back seat?  What possible benefit do you get from not having the dog in a cage?  Is it not more dangerous having a loose dog that jumps on the owner's lap while he or she is driving than to have it caged?  If you can't afford a cage for your car, don't own a dog, it's as simple as that.  I decided to not vent about that yesterday just in case it was my supreme hatred of dogs that made me feel that way, but 24 hours later I'm still confident that I'm right.  Why is this not a law?!  Little children have to be in car seats, is that only for their safety or is it to keep them sitting still as well so the parent can drive safely?  Certainly the first one, but I think the second one plays a factor as well.

2)  This little bitch Kara Beth Borden, the 14 year old girl who had an 18 year old boyfriend.   This 18 year old boyfriend shot her parents on Monday morning and "kidnapped her" because Kara missed her curfew and her parents were yelling at her.  Some call her the "victim".  I call her "the problem" and "the reason it all happened."   Sure, he's guilty as sin too, but we realize that.  What the world will soon forget is she's equally guilty for putting herself and her family in this position.  First of all - you're 14!! What in the hell are you doing with an 18 year old guy?!  What are you doing with some loser trash like this guy?  What are you doing staying out all night and having sex with an 18 year old.  Again - you're 14!!  How about you listen to your damn parents, date a respectible guy who is your age, and have some fucking respect and see things clearly!   They're saying she's the "victim" and I think that's full of shit.  It's her poor decisions that did this to her parents, she just didn't pull the trigger.  If I were in her family, I'd forgive her if she expressed sorrow, but then I'd want her 100% out of my life.  Pick your friends better, you should expect that if you hang out with garbage like that guy.  When people make decisions to be around idiots, I lose respect for them.  I feel sorry for the other lives' this selfish bitch has ruined, because she wanted to date the "cool older guy."    Now who's cool?  The guy who murders your parents becase he can only have sex with 14 year old chicks?  The guy who, even if he hadn't done this, would have been a minimum-wage worker for life?  They better toss this chick into a juvenile detention center until she's 18.

This payday rocks, I don't know why, it just does.

The mountains just got dumped on last night, it's making me very sad that I can't ride my board yet.  Vail got 13" last night.  Keystone already has a 38" mid-mountain base!! We never see that in November, at least not in the 5 seasons I've been a season pass holder.  I can't wait, these conditions are going to be phenomenal once I'm recouped....

Speaking of, my ankle is coming along wonderfully.  Yesterday I did elliptical for 15 minutes with absolutely no pain, then did all my stretches and such, then hopped on a bike and did a very fast 5 minutes.  Today I plan on doing the same, and I already lifted weights (at home) this morning.  I can walk without a limp 80% of the time now.   I can't run or jump or some other things, but it's slowly coming back.   I just want to make sure I'm 100% before I strap that board back on my feet.   I think I need to buy some new boots too, my old ones I've used for 4 seasons and are kind of loose, I'd imagine I should get some top-of-the-line boots to support that thing.  I'm liking these Vans Contras so far, I need to go try them on and see if I can find them cheap somewhere.

What's on my agenda?  I've got lots of stuff I have to do & want to do before I head back to Iowa, but I am leaving at 2:33 on Friday afternoon for Tyler and Amy's wedding.

Pic of the day is an anniversary picture of sorts.... haha. And the MP3 of the day is new as well, have a good one.

The only thing that sucks is that I have to actually cheer for Nebraksa of all teams, on Thanksgiving.  CU needs to lose (to Nebraska) and ISU needs to beat Kansas - and the Big XII North is ours ... and we'll play in the championship game against Texas.   Giddy up!

Seahawks next 4 games?
1)   at San Fran
2)   vs. NY Giants
3)   at Philly

I don't feel like typing today but it was time to update.  I'm frustrated right now and am pretty edgy, everything is getting on my nerves today.   Phone calls, work issues, people sending me video-attachment emails (I detest any email attachment that involves sound, don't send them, I delete them), being tired, being 10lbs heavier than I was in August, being weaker both physically and cardiovascularly, the fact that I lifted leg muscles all summer (I was up to sets of 250lbs on squats (plus body weight) - huge for me!) to have them extra strong for snowboarding season then having that backfire by having them be the weakest they've ever been (can't even squat my body weight safely) .... arghhhh.

Oh well, things will get better and I'll feel all the better for being able to pull through this.  Tonight = Pour House and/or poker.  Weekend = Seahawks beating Rams and Cyclones beating Buffs.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CORI!!!!!!!!(as seen here with Brent, Grandma, and Myself)  Since I'm family I'm allowed to laugh at her, she's 30 now, hahahaha.  Hey, at least I was nice to Jess when she turned 30! Although I'm going to get in trouble for even typing her age in that last sentence, aren't I?  I'm expecting a phone call yelling at me from Jess soon.  Anyways, happy birthday to my sister!

The news of Phil is officially on the stories page, and will remain there permanently.

Pictures are up on the Oct. and Nov. Colorado pages ... including:  Halloween, Crystal's Visit, Fight re-enactments, and just a few "hanging-out" pictures.   The "My Mind" article about my ankle has been updated with photos of the scene of the crime.

New MP3 is up today also, it's Joe Public - Live and Learn.

Please pray for Phil Kohorst and all of his family and friends, his funeral is tomorrow in Carroll - here's Phil's obituary.... and since this is my site, I'll specifically ask that you pray for his family whom I consider friends, which obviously include Jason, Chad, and Kris Kohorst, and Phil's brother (and my old teacher, coach, and detasseling boss) Mark Kohorst.

Let's discuss corn detasseling.  Hybrid corn is corn that is cross-pollinated.   You plant 2 types of corn in the same field.  In the case of hybrid corn, you plant 4 rows of type A corn (female) and 1 row of the type B corn (male).  So it goes male, female female female female, male.  The tassel is the part of the corn that contains the pollen, and in early to mid August (I think) is when that tassel will self-pollenate the corn.  However, to produce the hybrid, you need the tassel from the type B corn (male) to pollenate the female corn.  For this reason, in mid to late July (after the corn is fully grown but before pollenation) you go detasseling.  Before the tassel can self-pollenate the corn, you walk through rows of corn, which range anywhere from 1/4 mile to 1 mile in length, and manually pull the tassel from each piece of female corn.  This is a miserable job.  Summers in Iowa have temperatures consistently in the 90's, and if you're in a corn field, you're in the middle of the sun, so it's likely to have a heat index of 100 degrees or higher.  Iowa also has very high humidity, this doesn't help.  For this reason, to beat some of the heat, you begin detasseling by 6a.m. at the very latest.  Imagine walking through a soaking wet corn field, full of spiders and spiderwebs (which collapse in your face), walking through corn fields in which the corn can be as high as 8 or 9 feet in height (don't believe me? Here's Jess stanidng by it - she's just over 5 feet tall).

Let's paint this picture further.  It rained the night before, you're walking in mud and your feet sink with each step.  You have allergies and get corn rash so you have to wear a full sweatshirt and bandana to cover your neck.  You're soaking wet but boiling hot at the same time.  Your feet are tired as you've walked a good 8 miles so far today, you're thirsty, it's 10am, you've been working for 4 hours, and you still have about 5 or 6 more hours (at the bare minimum) before you can call it a day.   You're in the middle of a thistle field, you're hungover, your arms hurt, there's corn in your face, and the row you're walking in is unlevel as the planter's wheel rode where you walk, so it's rounded and you trip about every 5th step.

Sounds pretty miserable, doesn't it?  Call me crazy, but these were some of the best days of my life.  The job itself is horrible, but when you're 15 years old and you can pull in $14/hour, you'll do pretty much anything.  When I was about 13 doing this, I was only getting $6/hour.  Back then I wore my headphones to keep me company.   Walking in a field, listening to AC/DC's Thunderstruck or Body Count or some hard metal music like that.  But detasseling with headphones on is not the way to go.  The real reason I loved detasseling is because of the conversations you have with the people around you. You're doing miserable work in miserable conditions with 3 other people between male rows with you.  I've detasseled with Muhl, Klaver, Scott and Tim Schau, Staiert, and many others.  I remember the first time I went, I was in a crew with Tyson and Eric Rust, Dale Reineke (who passed away almost 4 years ago), and Kurt Baumhover was our supervisor.  That was the summer before my freshman year of high school and they were all 2-3 years older than me.  Not to sound ridiculous here, but I bonded with those guys for a good 2-3 weeks, every day, for hours and hours, and when I got to high school - I knew them all very well.  In fact, I still feel like I have some weird connection to those guys for some reason.

When I was a sophomore in high school, Mark Kohorst asked me to join him and a select few others for that season.  I would continue to go with this crew for 3 or 4 years, until I was 19.  I suppose 10 or 12 of us went that year, and these were by far and away the best detasseling seasons ever.  This guy who I'd never met before was in our group.  A big guy, huge guy, we're talking 6'3" 300lb guy.  He wore a garbage bag to keep from getting wet.  He had these enormous socks with holes cut out for fingers that went all the way up to his biceps to cover his arms from corn rash.  He was boisterous, loud, and --along with Mitch Hedberg-- the funniest damn person who has made me laugh.  Walking through miserable conditions in 100 degree heat, nothing was sore except my stomach from laughing so much.  He had a rendition of Lesbian Seagull from the Beavis & Butthead movie that would bring me to tears.   After detasseling, it was shower time then time to hit the town.  The next morning it was back at 'em, 5am, wet corn, mud, corn rash, hunger, exhaustion -- but we'd all be armed with our stories of what we did the previous night.  If for some reason I chose to watch paint dry the previous night, Phil would make a story about how this was the funniest thing in the world. The jokes, the stories, the immense laughter, the sudden "fox hole" tackle/attack from someone hiding in the corn to scare you, and most importanly, the friendship and comraderie.  The days just flew by at mach speeds, and I'm proud to talk about them.  I am also proud to call them some of the best days of my life, and I know those days will never be matched.

I was informed late last night that the man who made these days so fun for me, Phil Kohorst, died incredibly unexpectedly and suddenly this weekend immediately after leaving the Iowa State football game.  As I've told several people, Phil isn't the guy I would ever call up, and I'm not sure I have an email address for him any more.  But I can tell you that if I ran into him at the bar back in Carroll, the guy would come up, give me a hug, immediately hand me a beer, and we'd talk for a couple hours of the detasseling days.   The next few hours would be filled with laughter, and I'd leave saying "Thank God for that guy."  He had no enemies, only friends, all of whom would be laughing at all times around him.  I feel I know him as good as anyone, but if he listed his top 100 friends I'd be lucky to make the list.  It hurts me that I didn't get to spend more time with him than those wonderful days in the corn fields and the occasional meeting at the slow-pitch softball games, beer gardens in the summers, and bars in Carroll.  It brings a tear (more like several hundred) to my eye to see him go.   Please pray for all his family and friends, we'll miss you, Phil.

Jessica and I watched The Interpreter last night.  That was a weird movie - I mean, I got it, but I feel like it was way above me.  I got what was going on, but really didn't care, it's almost as if I was watching it solely to watch Nicole Kidman (who I think is gorgeous).  Jess slept through most of it, but I made it through easily.  It'll be burned, and maybe re-watched.  If you want a rental, go for it, why not?  Plus I'm a fan of Spicoli.... yup yup.

Tonight I'm going out with the one, the only, Crystal Mills.  Hells yes.  I picked her up at the airport on Monday (first time I'd seen her in 7 1/2 years) and brought her to Ft. Collins, but tonight she's in Denver, so I finally get to see my girl!   Hell yeah!!  Taking tomorrow off, probably hit up Red Rocks and ~maybe~ head to Estes, we'll see.  I'm quite broke right now so it'll be limited, but I guess I've always got those credit cards.  Rumor has it I know how to use them quite well :)

The "my mind" page has been booming lately, as I posted the 3rd thing in just over a week on it yesterday.  Today's entry on "My Mind" involves my ankle, go look for yourself if you want, otherwise, I don't care.

Speaking of my ankle, it's rehabilitating slowly, but surely.  I can now go down stairs, not easily, but without a railing.  My thera-bands, well, I'm getting much better, and my muscles in my calf are coming back.  And today, the big day, I'm going to the gym over lunch and getting on a stationary bike.  We'll see how that works, I'm just 20 minutes away from pedaling!  So yes, I don't know what the chances are of me being on a snowboard by Thanksgiving, I'm thinking of changing that goal to "Be on the snowboard by 2006", that may be more realistic.

I also updated the FleetForums to 2.0.18 from 2.0.17 ... if you're having trouble logging in with Mozilla, clear your cookie.  If you don't know how, you probably shouldn't be using web forums.  By the way, guest posting is enabled there, so you no longer have to register to post there, figured I'd pass that info tidbit along.

So yes, no update tomorrow as I'm taking it off.  Weekend will be low-key.   The ISU/KSU game isn't on TV so I can't watch that, the Seahawks have the Cardinals.  We're very bad coming off the bye week (traditionally), but this is the year we break traditions, so I'm certain we can take those bad boys on the road down in Tempe (exactly where I finished my 1/2 marathon - giggidy!).  Hopefully Shaun Alexander can run as well as I can.

What I am listening to as I type this:  Jewell - Fuck Wit Dre Day (Remix)
What I am currently addicted to: bitching about things

November 02, 2005

One word to describe the live Slipknot album that was released yesterday:   Onslaught.  New MP3 is up.

Wow, 3/4 of the things I voted for won, who knew?  I'm pretty consistent at voting for the exact opposite of everything that happens, for once I leave an election happy!   Rock on.  Even our Republican governor is coming around and taking our tax money (this is a good thing, trust me) after realizing he's snubbed higher education for years.  I'm quite shocked the "Leagalize Marijuana in Denver" bill passed.  It's irrelevant as the state and federal laws override it, but still, I was shocked it won, who knew?

I'm getting fat as shit, I can't wait until I can start running again, this is getting ridiculous.  In fact, I'm going to get out my towel and thera-band right now and work this damn ankle and leg muscles out, this thing needs to get back to normal ASAP!!!
